Fencing your property is a big decision and is something that you’ll live with for a long time. This guide aims to provide you with information to help budget for your project.
Horse Fencing
As you’re looking at purchasing a Horserail product through one of our distributors, this guide will help you form an initial budget which you can use to decide on a layout to go with.
Considerations When Looking at Horse Fencing
There are three things to consider when looking at different fencing options:
- The initial purchase price of the material (fence rail, hardware, and posts)
- The labor price associated with installing the materials
- The lifetime cost of ownership associated with the fence
First, let’s look at the upfront cost of the major fence types to get an idea of what the budget is for each.
Then, we’ll look at the labor cost associated with installing fence
Finally, we’ll look at how the lifetime ownership costs can vary between options
Cost Comparisons of Horserail and Other Fencing Options
Horserail® Products Initial Cost

The cost for Horserail products is determined by the distributor but we can provide ranges so you can budget for your project and see it’s approximate relative cost to other types of horse fences.
Horserail rail products can range around $1 – $2 per foot ($3 – $6 for three rails).

These prices vary by product and layout and are also subject to change. Does not include cost of hardware or posts. Click the button below for your pricing.
Horserail rail and coated wire products are commonly used together to fit the needs of the property and the budget as you will see next.
Rail and Wire Configurations
Cost is dependent on the kind of fencing configuration you go with.
The lowest cost configuration would be all Horsecote while the highest cost would be using all HotTop Plus.
When deciding on a fencing configuration you have a lot of flexibility to fine tune the fencing products you use for your specific needs.
Choosing to Electrify
If you are even considering electrifying your fence it is highly recommended that you give yourself that option when deciding on Horserail fencing.
You can always decide to run electricity through it later and it would be much cheaper to get an electrifiable option now rather than having to get new fencing later.
Here’s a short list of reasons you should get something electrifiable:
- Horserail products allow you to introduce electricity in the safest way possible
- Prevents bad habits such a leaning, or cribbing
- Can eliminate the need for separation fencing to keep horses apart
- Maximizes the cost effectiveness of your fencing
Hardware
It’s important to also remember that Horserail products require their hardware to be installed correctly.
Make sure to work with your distributor to determine the hardware needed for your project.
Wood Rail Fence: Initial Cost
A traditional choice that remains popular largely due to familiarity—not performance.
While it’s widely recognized by horse owners, it often falls short due to safety, maintenance, and longevity.
People are often surprised when they learn that the initial cost of wood rail fence and Horserail are similar.
Wood fence typically costs around $1.02 per foot ($3.06 for three rails).
This pricing is making a wood a less popular option nowadays since you can get so much more out of a Horserail fence for a similar price.
PVC Rail Fence: Initial Cost
Another horse fence made of plastic except PVC rail refers to non-flexible boards.
PVC tends to be a cheaper and more rigid compared to polyethylene which is what Horserail plastic is made of.
This fence has characteristics that make it more brittle and prone to sagging and warping.
In some cases, impacts from horses can create shards to break off and injure the horse.
The cost of PVC rail fence tends to be more expensive at $4.20 per foot ($12.69 for three rails).
Steel Rail Fence: Initial Cost
A modern long-lasting option that offers high-durability and low maintenance.
Steel rail is the most expensive with a cost around $7.33 per foot ($22.00 for three rails).
Steel board fencing is usually incorporated when budget is not an area for concern and is mostly done in high-visibility areas of the property like the house and driveway.
For people who end up buying steel rail fencing it is very popular to use Horserail in paddocks and pastures where large amounts of fencing are required and where horses spend most of their time outside of the barn or stables.
Electric Rope & Tape Fence: Initial Cost
Electric rope and tape have a low upfront cost and are DIY friendly.
The drawback to it is that it isn’t as durable and doesn’t last as long as other fencing options (around five years).
The cost is around $0.15 per foot ($0.60 for four strands) which makes it have a low upfront cost but high cost if you spread it across only five years as opposed to 20–30-year lifespan for Horserail products.
Electric rope and tape can be a good option for temporary fencing. Horserail products can also be taken down and with you if you ever must move.
Labor Costs for Horse Fencing Installation
When budgeting for your horse fence, it’s important to consider installation as well as materials.
A common rule of thumb is that professional installation often costs about the same as, or up to twice as much as, the materials themselves.
For example, if your materials cost around $6 per linear foot, installation might add another $6–12 per foot, bringing the total installed cost to roughly $12–18 per foot.
Actual rates vary based on terrain, fence type, post-setting method, and local labor prices. Always get quotes from local contractors to ensure accurate pricing for your property.
Lifetime Cost of Ownership for Each Type of Fence
While it’s hard to put an exact number on lifetime costs, choosing the right fence can save thousands over the years.
Non-Horserail fencing often requires frequent repairs, repainting, or even full replacement after damage or wear. Worse, injuries from broken rail or wire can lead to unexpected vet bills that can easily reach $5,000, $10,000, or even $20,000+.
Horserail’s safety-focused design and exceptional durability reduce the need for repairs and help reduce the risk of injuries, saving you significant time, stress, and money in the long run.
When you consider the hassle of replacing damaged sections, managing injuries, and the overall maintenance burden, Horserail products become the most cost-effective choice over the life of your fence.
